Lee Scratch Perry needs giant Super Ape & more for Dub Champions Festival

Lee Scratch Perry Super Ape Dub Champions Festival
Final day of Kickstarter! Ends Thursday evening! To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s “Super Ape” album, one of the crowning achievements of dub and reggae produced at his Black Ark studio in Jamaica, Scratch will be performing the album for the first time ever live at Dub Champions Festival events across the USA this September and October. Check out the Kickstarter here! Bring this historic album to life and contribute towards:

  1. A giant inflatable gorilla to emulate the album art
  2. Including our full backing vocal and horn section throughout the tour [band members are currently based in NYC and LA]
  3. Animations of the album cover artwork

Please watch the video for more information on the project and history of Lee Perry. This Kickstarter is put on by Emch, founder of Dub Champions Festival and band leader of Subatomic Sound System, with the consent of Lee Perry. We have been supporting Scratch in the USA for the past 5 years. During that time, we have refined a combination of electronic elements and live instruments to represent Scratch’s Black Ark studio sound in a live environment. Subatomic Sound presents the 3rd annual Dub Champions Festival Europe, a journey into the international musical phenomenon called “dub.” Characterized by heavy bass, drums, and the copious use of effects, producers become the artists and the mixing board becomes an instrument with this Jamaican art form.  The festival features both performances & educational workshops to exhibit how the music is created and has evolved from its 1970s, reggae roots to become a cornerstone of electronic bass music. Dub has also inspired countless genres from rap to rock to punk to dance music, and in the process has redefined the role of producer as artist. Advance ticket links for all events on the festival site and Facebook events for all 9 shows and workshops.

Lee “Scratch” Perry & Subatomic Sound System “Black Ark Vampires” limited edition 45 vinyl

SS029 Lee Scratch Perry & Subatomic Sound System "Black Ark Vampires" vinyl 7" 45

UPDATE New mixes also available 3/18/2016 on Black Ark Vampires digital EP.

Lee “Scratch” Perry & Subatomic Sound System “Black Ark Vampires” limited edition vinyl 45 debuted Nov. 4. 2014 on Juno Records, #1 in dub, #1 in reggae, and broke the top #100 in all music before selling out on the site (more copies on the way).  It premiered for Halloween on Brooklyn based Jamaican culture site Large Up  and received an overwhelming response.  Buy it directly from Crosstalk Distribution (US), Juno Records (UK) (who ship worldwide), Jetset (Japan) and many other fine record stores around the globe.

On “Black Ark Vampires”, Lee “Scratch” Perry & Subatomic Sound System have crafted a throbbing sound-man tune propelled by subsonic bass, bubbling skanks, and pulsing beats that balance the murky and mystical vibes of Perry’s classic Jamaican dub reggae recordings with the flammable energy and subsonic vibrations of current electronic bass music, fine tuning a recipe that they have slow cooked throughout their last four years of U.S. tours spreading authentic dub to a new generation in places like Coachella, Dub Champions Festival, and Red Bull Music Academy.
